Best Quality Used Infiniti Engines

Infiniti is the luxury car arm of Nissan Motor Company, which was introduced in 1989, taking on Lexus and Acura in North America. But the truth is, Infiniti's vehicles are born out of Nissan - they share the same powertrains as some of Nissan's more high-performance models. And where do Infiniti engines come from? Who makes infiniti cars engines? They're engineered and built by Nissan's powertrain division, right in Yokohama, Japan, the very same place where you'll find the production lines for Nissan's VQ, VR, and MR engine families. Some newer models might actually be built at Decherd Powertrain Plant in Tennessee, USA, a joint venture between Nissan and Daimler AG (the people behind Mercedes-Benz) that's producing engines for the infiniti q50 engine and Q60 cars.

You've probably heard of the VQ35DE and VQ37VHR series engines that Infiniti is famous for, the quality that they're built to last, and have been used in Nissan's 350Z, 370Z, and Maxima models, too. The Q50 2.0T model that Daimler built was a bit of a problem child in various markets, with owners experiencing turbocharger oil line failures and timing chain tensioner issues more often than you'd like.

Compatibility of Infiniti Engines with Other Makes

Does Nissan and Infiniti have the same engine? Infiniti and Nissan share a massive amount of their gasoline & hybrid powertrain platforms. The VQ, VK, and VR engines you find in Infiniti models can also be found in Nissan-built cars like the Z-series sports cars, Pathfinder, and Titan. It's no surprise that the Infiniti G35 engine and Infiniti G37 engine are actually running the same VQ35 and VQ37 engines as the 350Z and 370Z from Nissan. These 350Z Nissan engines share the same core architecture, which means that used engines are pretty much swappable between the vehicles with minimal hassle.

What engine does the Infiniti Q50 have? The Infiniti Q50 engine and Q60 have Infiniti engines coming from a mix of Nissan and Mercedes-Benz. The early ones got a V6 from Nissan's VQ37VHR 3.7L, but later on, from 2016 onwards, the VR30DDTT twin-turbo V6 became the standard fit. And then there are those 2.0L Q50 variants, which used the Mercedes-Benz M274 turbo engine thanks to the Nissan-Daimler alliance

Engine and Cross-Fitting Details

  • The 3.5 liter VQ35DE V6 in the Infiniti G35, FX35 & M35 - was over at Renault's place, powering their Vel Satis, Espace & Laguna III under the Renault – Nissan Alliance.
  • The VQ37VHR 3.7-liter engine in the Infiniti G37 & FX37 actually shares its design & production with the Nissan 370Z, and also made an appearance in the Renault Samsung SM7 sedan in South Korea.
  • The 2.0-liter Mercedes-Benz M274 turbo engine you find in some Infiniti Q50 & Q30 models came from Daimler and is shared across Mercedes C-Class, E-Class & GLA models.
  • The 5.0-liter VK50VE V8 used in the FX50 actually shares the same basic VK family architecture as the engines used in Nissan's Japan-only luxury sedans, the President and Cima.
  • The VR30DDTT twin-turbo V6 used in the Infiniti Q50 engine & Q60 Red Sport 400 has since found its way into the 2023 Nissan Z sports coupe on the same platform & powertrain line.

Infinity Transmissions

There are several relevant transmissions employed in infinity make. The Infiniti G35 & 350Z:  both use a 5-speed automatic transmission known as RE5R05A and a 6-speed manual transmission coded FS6R31A; these were made by Jatco, which just so happens to be a Nissan subsidiary. Meanwhile, you'll also find the RE5R05A 5-speed automatic transmission in the Infiniti FX45 and M45 (VK45DE engine too). On the flip side, the Infiniti G37, FX37, Q50, Q60 with VR30DDTT and M37 all benefit from a 7-speed automatic transmission with code JR711E (RE7R01A), a development made jointly by Nissan and Jatco to be used in rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations - now that's a partnership
